Best Warm Winter Destinations in Europe 2026–2027: Where to Escape the Cold

A practical guide to the best European destinations for travelers who want milder weather, sunshine, coastal walks, outdoor cafés, and winter city breaks without freezing temperatures.

Europe in winter does not have to mean ski slopes, heavy coats and freezing city streets. Head far enough south — or west into the Atlantic — and winter can mean palm trees, seaside promenades, long lunches outdoors and daytime temperatures that feel more like spring than January.

From Tenerife and Gran Canaria to Madeira, Malta, Cyprus, Málaga and Sicily, there are several places where a winter trip can be surprisingly pleasant. The important thing is understanding what "warm" actually means. Some destinations can deliver genuine beach weather on good days, while others are better for sightseeing, hiking and café terraces than swimming.

This guide covers the best warm winter destinations in Europe for the 2026–2027 season, including where to go in December, January and February, where you can realistically swim, which destinations work best for families or couples, and what to expect from prices and off-season opening hours.

Important: temperatures in this guide are based on long-term climate patterns rather than a weather forecast for winter 2026–2027. Always check the local forecast shortly before travelling.

Where Is Warm in Europe During Winter?

The warmest winter conditions associated with European destinations are generally found in the Canary Islands. Although geographically close to the coast of northwest Africa, the islands are part of Spain and are one of Europe's most established winter-sun destinations.

Coastal Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote regularly experience winter afternoons around 20–23°C. Southern Tenerife and southern Gran Canaria tend to be especially popular with travellers looking for sunshine in December, January and February.

Madeira is another excellent Atlantic option. It is usually a little cooler than the Canaries, but its subtropical climate keeps coastal areas pleasantly mild throughout winter.

Around the Mediterranean, Cyprus, Malta, Málaga, the Costa del Sol, Seville, Sicily, Crete and Athens can all offer mild and sunny periods. However, temperatures here are generally closer to 14–19°C than 20–23°C, and occasional rain or chilly evenings should be expected.

Think of the Mediterranean choices as destinations where you may eat lunch outside in a light jacket rather than places where you are guaranteed to spend every afternoon in swimwear.

Typical Winter Weather by Destination

These ranges are intended as practical planning guides. Individual days may be considerably warmer or cooler.

Destination Typical Winter Daytime Weather Winter Experience Swimming?
Tenerife About 20–23°C Sunny and spring-like Possible, sea is cool
Gran Canaria About 20–23°C Excellent winter sun Often possible
Lanzarote About 19–22°C Dry, sunny and breezy Possible
Madeira About 17–20°C Mild, green and changeable Cool for most travellers
Cyprus About 17–19°C Sunny periods with some rain Possible in December, cooler later
Malta About 15–17°C Mild sightseeing weather Usually cold
Málaga About 17–18°C Sunny city-break weather Sea generally cool
Seville About 16–18°C Excellent for sightseeing No beach
Algarve About 16–18°C Quiet, sunny Atlantic coast Cold Atlantic water
Valencia About 14–17°C Mild urban winter Usually too cold
Sicily About 14–17°C Culture, food and quieter cities Generally chilly
Crete About 15–17°C Quiet, green and occasionally rainy Cold for most visitors
Athens About 13–15°C Great sightseeing weather Not really a beach trip

Can You Actually Swim in Europe in December or January?

Yes — but destination choice matters.

The Canary Islands offer the most realistic combination of sunshine, warm air and swimmable water. Sea temperatures around the islands average roughly 20°C through the year and are generally around 18–21°C during winter. That is cool compared with a Mediterranean summer, but many visitors still swim.

Southern Tenerife, Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas and southern Gran Canaria around Maspalomas are among the more practical choices for a winter beach trip.

Cyprus can also remain surprisingly mild. The sea averages around 21°C in December before dropping to approximately 17°C during January and February. December therefore has a better chance of comfortable swimming than the middle of winter.

Madeira's natural pools and Atlantic beaches remain accessible throughout winter, but the water will feel cool. Malta, southern Spain, Portugal, Sicily and Greece should generally be considered sightseeing destinations rather than traditional swimming holidays from December to February.

Travellers prioritising pool time should consider a hotel with a heated outdoor or indoor pool rather than assuming the sea will be comfortable.

Canary Islands, Spain

Tenerife

Tenerife is one of the easiest recommendations for travellers searching for genuine winter sun without leaving Europe. Southern Tenerife is generally drier and sunnier than the north, making Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas especially popular during the winter months.

But Tenerife is more than beaches. Teide National Park gives the island a dramatic volcanic interior, while Anaga offers completely different landscapes with forests, mountains and hiking routes.

Tenerife works particularly well for families and couples because you can combine resort relaxation, restaurants, mountain scenery and day trips without constantly packing and changing hotels.

Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is another strong choice for a winter beach holiday. The south around Maspalomas, Meloneras and Puerto Rico is popular because of its dry, sunny climate.

Maspalomas offers wide beaches and famous dunes, while the island's mountainous interior provides excellent road-trip scenery. Las Palmas adds museums, restaurants and city life, making Gran Canaria a good option if you want both beach time and urban activities.

Lanzarote

Lanzarote has a very different atmosphere. Volcanic landscapes, white villages, black lava fields and César Manrique's architecture create one of the most distinctive islands in Europe.

Winter is particularly comfortable for exploring places such as Timanfaya National Park because temperatures are much easier for walking and sightseeing than during the hottest parts of summer.

Best for: winter sunshine, beaches, families, couples, swimming, hiking and one-week holidays.

Madeira, Portugal

Madeira is one of Europe's best alternatives to a conventional winter beach holiday. Rather than endless sandy beaches, expect dramatic cliffs, subtropical gardens, levada walks, waterfalls, mountain viewpoints and the lively capital of Funchal.

Coastal temperatures remain mild through winter, although Madeira's many microclimates mean conditions can change quickly. Funchal may be sunny while the mountains are cloudy, wet or much cooler.

This makes layers essential. A mild morning on the coast can turn into cool and damp hiking conditions at higher elevations.

Madeira is particularly attractive for active travellers. Winter temperatures are often comfortable for hiking, although trails can occasionally close because of heavy rain, landslides or unsafe conditions.

Best for: couples, hikers, scenery, photography, nature and a relaxed one-week break.

Malta

Malta is an excellent winter destination if your idea of warmth is comfortable sightseeing rather than sunbathing every day.

Valletta, Mdina, the Three Cities and Gozo become much easier to explore without the intense summer heat. Winter also brings greener countryside, making coastal walks particularly attractive.

Daytime temperatures are commonly in the mid-teens, but wind and rain can make individual days feel considerably cooler. A waterproof layer is therefore worth packing.

Malta's compact size makes it particularly suitable for a three- or four-day winter break. You can stay in Valletta, Sliema or St Julian's and visit much of the island without frequently changing hotels.

Best for: history, couples, short breaks, architecture, coastal walks and travellers who do not need beach weather.

Cyprus

Cyprus has some of the mildest Mediterranean winters in Europe. December can still bring pleasant sunny afternoons and relatively mild sea temperatures, while January and February become cooler and wetter.

Paphos and Limassol are good bases for winter visitors because they combine archaeological sites, promenades, restaurants and easy access to the countryside.

Cyprus is also unusual because you can experience mild coastal weather while the Troodos Mountains may have snow.

December is the most interesting winter month for travellers who would still like the possibility of swimming. January and February are better approached as outdoor, sightseeing and road-trip seasons.

Remember that Cyprus drives on the left.

Best for: road trips, archaeological sites, relaxation, couples and travellers looking for a quieter Mediterranean holiday.

Algarve, Portugal

Portugal's Algarve receives far fewer winter visitors than during summer, but its dramatic cliffs, sandy beaches and coastal paths remain.

Winter afternoons can be sunny and pleasantly mild, making places such as Lagos, Tavira, Faro and Carvoeiro attractive for walking, golf and road trips.

However, this is the Atlantic. The water is cold and the region should not be booked as a guaranteed winter swimming holiday.

The quieter atmosphere is one of its greatest advantages. Beaches that are extremely busy in July and August can feel almost empty during parts of winter.

Best for: couples, road trips, hiking, coastal scenery, photography and travellers who prefer quiet destinations.

Málaga and the Costa del Sol, Spain

Málaga combines several things that make a winter city break easy: mild weather, beaches, museums, historic streets, excellent food and good transport connections.

Typical winter afternoons around 17–18°C are comfortable for exploring the Alcazaba, walking along the waterfront or eating outdoors when the sun is shining.

The Costa del Sol also makes it easy to extend the trip. Marbella, Nerja, Estepona and traditional inland towns can all be reached by day trip or rental car.

The sea is normally cool in winter, so think of the beach as a place for walks and sunshine rather than guaranteed swimming.

Best for: weekend breaks, couples, food, museums, sunshine and travellers wanting both city and coast.

Seville, Spain

Seville has no beach, but it deserves a place in a winter-sun guide because winter is one of the most comfortable times to explore the city.

Summer temperatures can be extreme. By contrast, winter daytime highs often sit in the mid-to-high teens, making long walks through Santa Cruz, Plaza de España, the Real Alcázar and the historic centre much more comfortable.

Evenings can become cold, so layers are necessary, but sunny afternoons can feel surprisingly spring-like.

Best for: culture, food, architecture, couples and three- or four-day winter breaks.

Valencia, Spain

Valencia is cooler than the Canary Islands or Cyprus, but it offers an appealing combination of relatively mild winter weather, Mediterranean light, beaches, architecture and excellent food.

The historic centre, Turia Gardens and City of Arts and Sciences provide enough activities for a long weekend even if the weather changes.

Winter beach visits are more about walking, cycling and sitting in the sun than swimming.

Best for: food, cycling, architecture, families and affordable city breaks.

Sicily, Italy

Sicily becomes a completely different destination in winter.

Palermo, Catania, Syracuse and the baroque towns of southeastern Sicily can be explored without summer's heat and biggest crowds. Markets, archaeological sites, churches and restaurants make Sicily particularly suitable for travellers interested in culture and food.

Coastal temperatures often remain in the mid-teens during the day, although rain and wind are possible. The mountains and Mount Etna can be dramatically colder and may receive snow.

Many major cultural attractions remain accessible, but smaller beach resorts can become extremely quiet and some seasonal hotels or restaurants close.

Best for: food, archaeology, culture, road trips and travellers looking for a slower version of Sicily.

Crete, Greece

Crete is one of Greece's mildest winter islands, particularly around the coast. Heraklion has average winter daytime highs of roughly 15–17°C.

However, winter Crete should not be treated like summer Crete. Many resorts built primarily around summer beach tourism become quiet, and some hotels, beach restaurants and tourism services close for the season.

Instead, base yourself in a functioning year-round city such as Chania, Heraklion or Rethymno and concentrate on food, archaeological sites, old towns, countryside and coastal scenery.

Winter also makes the landscape greener, while higher mountains may carry snow.

Best for: independent travellers, culture, nature, photography and quiet road trips.

Athens, Greece

Athens is not a winter beach destination, but it can be an excellent sunny alternative to colder northern-European capitals.

Daytime winter temperatures are usually around the low-to-mid teens. That makes climbing the Acropolis, walking through Plaka and exploring archaeological sites considerably easier than during a summer heatwave.

The city stays active all year, meaning restaurants, museums and nightlife are less affected by seasonal closures than Greek island resorts.

Best for: history, food, short breaks, museums and travellers prioritising sightseeing over beaches.

Algarve and Lisbon Combination

Travellers with around one week can combine Lisbon with the Algarve rather than choosing between a city break and the coast.

Spend several days exploring Lisbon's neighbourhoods, viewpoints, cafés and museums, then continue south for quieter beaches, coastal walks and a slower pace in the Algarve.

This combination works particularly well for travellers who are not expecting tropical temperatures but want a varied winter itinerary with significantly milder weather than much of northern Europe.

Where Is the Warmest Place in Europe in December?

For travellers looking for the most reliable combination of warmth and sunshine, the Canary Islands are generally the strongest choice.

Coastal areas of Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote can see typical daytime temperatures around 20–23°C in December. The sea is also warmer in December than it usually is later in winter.

Cyprus is another interesting December choice, with typical daytime temperatures around 19°C and sea temperatures that can still be around 21°C.

Madeira is excellent for mild weather and outdoor activities, although it tends to be more changeable than the driest Canary Island resorts.

Where Is Warm in Europe in January?

January is usually the coldest month across much of Europe, making the Canary Islands stand out even more clearly.

Tenerife and Gran Canaria remain especially attractive for January holidays, with daytime highs around 20–22°C in many coastal areas.

Madeira, Cyprus, Málaga and the Algarve are also useful January escapes if your priority is sightseeing, hiking and sitting outside when the sun appears rather than guaranteed beach weather.

Where Is Warm in Europe in February?

February starts to bring longer days, but Mediterranean sea temperatures remain close to their coldest point of the year.

The Canary Islands remain the most dependable winter-sun option. Madeira is excellent for active holidays, while Málaga, Seville, Malta, Sicily and Athens work particularly well for sightseeing.

February can also be a useful month for travellers looking for better-value city breaks before spring demand increases.

Best Places for a February Escape

Choose Tenerife or Gran Canaria if sunshine and resort facilities matter most.

Choose Madeira if hiking and spectacular scenery are your priority.

Choose Málaga, Seville or Malta for an easy long weekend.

Choose Sicily, Athens or Crete if your holiday is primarily about food, history and sightseeing rather than beaches.

Can You Have a Beach Holiday in Europe During Winter?

Yes, but expectations should be realistic.

A Canary Islands holiday can genuinely include sunbathing, beach afternoons and swimming, particularly on warm, sheltered days.

In Madeira or Cyprus, you may get beautiful sunny beach weather but swimming conditions are less predictable.

In Malta, southern Spain, Portugal, Sicily or Greece, beaches are better viewed as beautiful places for walks, cafés, cycling and sunsets during the heart of winter.

Best Warm Winter Destinations for Couples

Madeira stands out for dramatic landscapes, boutique accommodation, hiking and romantic dinners in Funchal.

The Algarve works well for quiet coastal road trips, while Seville offers restaurants, historic architecture and atmospheric evening streets.

Couples wanting a more traditional resort holiday should look at southern Tenerife or Gran Canaria.

Best Warm Winter Destinations for Families

Tenerife and Gran Canaria are among the easiest choices for families because tourist infrastructure operates throughout winter and many resorts have heated pools, restaurants and family attractions.

Málaga and Valencia are good alternatives for families who prefer a city break with parks, museums, beaches and easy public transport.

Malta's compact geography is another advantage for families who want short travel times between attractions.

What Is the Cheapest Warm Winter Destination in Europe?

There is no single cheapest destination because airfare often matters more than hotel price. A €40 flight to Málaga may make southern Spain cheaper for one traveller, while someone else might find a low-cost flight to Malta, Sicily or Athens.

Málaga, Valencia, Athens, Sicily and Malta can all offer good-value winter city breaks, especially outside Christmas, New Year and school holidays.

Do not assume the Canary Islands are automatically cheap simply because it is winter. Winter is one of the islands' most desirable seasons, so flights and resorts can remain relatively expensive.

The best strategy is to compare the complete trip price — flights, accommodation, airport transfers and local transport — rather than searching only for the lowest hotel rate.

Best Places for Hiking and Outdoor Activities

Madeira is one of the strongest choices for hiking thanks to its levadas, forests, cliffs and mountain landscapes.

Tenerife offers everything from coastal walks to volcanic routes around Teide. Gran Canaria has impressive mountain terrain in its interior, while Lanzarote provides easier walks through surreal volcanic landscapes.

The Algarve is excellent for coastal walking, particularly around its cliffs and beaches.

Crete and Cyprus can also be rewarding, although winter rain and mountain conditions need to be considered before attempting longer routes.

Beach Holiday vs Sightseeing Trip

If You Want... Consider...
Best chance of beach weather Tenerife or Gran Canaria
Beach plus volcanic landscapes Lanzarote
Hiking and scenery Madeira
City plus beach promenade Málaga or Valencia
History and architecture Malta, Seville or Athens
Food and culture Sicily or Seville
Quiet island experience Crete
Road trip and coast Algarve or Cyprus

What to Pack for a Warm European Winter

Do not pack as though you are travelling to the Mediterranean in July. Even warm winter destinations can have cool mornings, cold evenings, wind and rain.

  • Lightweight T-shirts for warm afternoons
  • Long trousers
  • A jumper or fleece
  • A light insulated jacket
  • A waterproof or wind-resistant outer layer
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Swimwear if visiting the Canary Islands or a hotel with a heated pool
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen — winter sun can still be strong
  • A small backpack for layers during day trips

Madeira requires particularly flexible clothing because the temperature can change substantially between the coast and mountains.

Are Restaurants and Attractions Open Off-Season?

In year-round cities such as Málaga, Seville, Valencia, Valletta, Athens, Palermo and Funchal, most major restaurants, museums and cultural attractions continue operating throughout winter.

The same is generally true in the main resorts of Tenerife and Gran Canaria because winter is an important tourism season.

Seasonal closures are more noticeable in small beach resorts in Crete, Sicily, Cyprus, Malta and parts of the Algarve. Some hotels, beach clubs, boat excursions and seaside restaurants may close or operate reduced hours.

Check individual opening times before building an itinerary around a particular attraction or restaurant.

How Much Cheaper Is Winter Travel?

Winter can offer significant savings in destinations where December to February is genuinely low season, particularly parts of Sicily, Greece, Portugal and mainland Spain.

Hotel prices often fall when summer demand disappears, and rental cars can also be cheaper. However, there is no reliable Europe-wide percentage because prices depend heavily on the destination, dates and flights.

Christmas, New Year and school holidays can create major price spikes.

The Canary Islands are another exception. Winter sun is one of their main attractions, meaning accommodation and flights can be in high demand precisely when much of the rest of Europe is in low season.

Renting a Car in Winter

A rental car can dramatically improve a winter trip in Madeira, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Sicily, Cyprus, Crete or the Algarve.

Check weather conditions before driving into mountain areas. Teide, Madeira's highlands, Mount Etna, the Troodos Mountains and the mountains of Crete can experience completely different conditions from nearby beaches.

Madeira also has steep and narrow roads, so travellers uncomfortable with mountain driving may prefer organised tours or transfers for certain areas.

Malta and Cyprus drive on the left, something visitors from most continental European countries should remember when renting a vehicle.

Best Destinations for a 3–4 Day Winter Break

Destination Why It Works
Málaga Compact centre, museums, coast and easy airport access
Seville Excellent food, architecture and manageable sightseeing
Malta Small distances and many historical attractions
Valencia Old town, modern architecture, gardens and beach
Athens Major historical sites plus excellent restaurants and museums
Funchal Good option if flight times make a short Madeira break practical

Best Destinations for a One-Week Winter Holiday

Tenerife and Gran Canaria are ideal for a full week because you can alternate beach days with mountain trips, villages and hiking.

Madeira easily fills a week for travellers interested in hiking, viewpoints, gardens and road trips.

Cyprus works well with a rental car, while Sicily provides enough food, archaeological sites and cities for far longer than seven days.

An Algarve and Lisbon itinerary is another strong seven-day option because it combines urban sightseeing with a quieter Atlantic coast.

Final Comparison: Best Warm Winter Destinations in Europe

Destination Winter Style Best For Typical Winter Feel
Tenerife 🇪🇸 Island sunshine Beaches + nature One of the warmest options
Gran Canaria 🇪🇸 Warm escape Beach holiday Sunny, especially in the south
Lanzarote 🇪🇸 Volcanic sunshine Nature + road trips Mild, dry and breezy
Madeira 🇵🇹 Mild & green Hiking + scenery Spring-like coast, cooler mountains
Malta 🇲🇹 Mild city break History + coast Mild but occasionally wet and windy
Málaga 🇪🇸 Sunny city Weekend break Comfortable sightseeing weather
Algarve 🇵🇹 Quiet coast Couples + road trips Sunny but cool Atlantic
Sicily 🇮🇹 Culture + food Sightseeing Mild days and cool evenings
Cyprus 🇨🇾 Mild Mediterranean Relaxation Sunny spells and mild coast
Crete 🇬🇷 Quiet island Nature + culture Green, mild and occasionally rainy
Seville 🇪🇸 City sunshine Culture + food Very pleasant for walking
Valencia 🇪🇸 Mediterranean city Food + short breaks Mild but not beach-hot
Athens 🇬🇷 Winter city break History + food Cooler but comfortable for sightseeing

So, Where Should You Go?

If your main goal is escaping winter and getting as close as possible to a real beach holiday, start with Tenerife, Gran Canaria or Lanzarote.

If you would rather hike through spectacular landscapes in comfortable temperatures, Madeira is difficult to beat.

For a short winter weekend with food, history and outdoor cafés, look at Málaga, Seville, Malta or Valencia.

Travellers interested in culture and food rather than swimming should consider Sicily, Athens or Crete, while Cyprus offers one of the better combinations of Mediterranean scenery, mild weather and road-trip possibilities.

And if you want several different experiences in one holiday, combining Lisbon with the Algarve gives you a major European city and one of the continent's most beautiful coastlines in a single trip.

Winter travel in southern Europe is not about pretending that January is August. The real advantage is different: fewer crowds, softer light, comfortable walking temperatures, quieter historic centres and the possibility of enjoying lunch beside the sea while much of Europe is dealing with frost, snow and short grey days.

Choose the Canary Islands when warmth matters most. Choose Madeira when nature matters most. Choose southern European cities when culture, food and value matter more than swimming. With the right expectations, winter can be one of the most rewarding times of the year to travel through Europe.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the warmest European destination in winter?

The Canary Islands are generally the most reliable mainstream European destination for warm winter weather, with many coastal areas around 20–23°C during the day.

The Canary Islands are the most realistic option. Winter sea temperatures are cool rather than tropical, but many visitors swim. Elsewhere in southern Europe, the sea is usually considerably colder.

Where is warm in Europe in December?

Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Madeira and Cyprus are among the strongest December choices. Southern Spain, Malta and the Algarve are generally mild rather than genuinely hot.

Where is warm in Europe in February?

The Canary Islands remain the strongest option for warmth. Madeira, Málaga, Cyprus, Malta, Seville and southern Portugal are good alternatives for outdoor activities and sightseeing.

Is southern Spain hot in winter?

Usually not hot. Málaga and Seville commonly experience daytime temperatures in the mid-to-high teens during winter. Sunny afternoons can feel very pleasant, while mornings and evenings may still require a jacket.

Is Malta warm enough for a winter holiday?

Yes for sightseeing, walking and outdoor activities. Malta has mild winters compared with northern Europe, but December to February should not normally be treated as beach-swimming season.

Is Madeira warmer than the Canary Islands in winter?

Usually no. Madeira remains pleasantly mild, but the Canary Islands generally offer higher and more reliable winter temperatures, particularly in southern Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

What is the best warm winter destination for a one-week holiday?

Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Madeira are particularly well suited to a week because they combine scenery, outdoor activities, towns and enough variety for several day trips.
